The Science of Living With Climate Risk

Climate science increasingly shapes decisions that once looked unrelated to environmental policy. Cities plan drainage around extreme rainfall, insurers price physical risk, farmers adapt to changing growing conditions, and infrastructure planners consider heat and water stress.

The useful distinction is between prediction and preparation. No model can tell a community exactly what will happen on a particular street on a particular day. But scientific evidence can reveal which risks are becoming more plausible and which investments reduce exposure.

Adaptation is therefore a form of practical engineering. Stronger buildings, better water management, heat-resilient neighborhoods and diversified energy systems can reduce losses even when uncertainty remains. The challenge is to turn scientific knowledge into decisions that ordinary institutions can implement.
