The dollar occupies a central place in global finance because of the size of the American economy, deep financial markets and long-standing institutional relationships. This position gives the United States unusual influence, but it also creates responsibilities.

International reliance on dollar markets means American financial decisions can affect economies far beyond the United States. Sanctions, interest-rate changes and banking rules can therefore have geopolitical consequences.

The dollar’s role is not guaranteed forever. Other currencies and payment systems can expand, especially when countries seek to reduce vulnerability to American policy. The strongest defense of monetary influence is credible institutions, liquid markets and confidence in the rule of law.
