Diplomacy Works Best When Power and Patience Meet

Diplomacy is sometimes described as the alternative to power, but effective diplomacy usually depends on credible capabilities. A country negotiates more effectively when partners and rivals understand what it can do and what it is willing to do.

Yet power without patience can produce poor outcomes. Negotiations require time, knowledge of local interests and willingness to accept partial gains. Public threats may create pressure, but they can also reduce room for compromise.

American foreign policy is strongest when military, economic and diplomatic tools reinforce one another rather than operating separately. Influence is usually built through repeated relationships, not single dramatic moments.
